The Canton Corner

Canton TWP, MI Community

Barbecue enthusiasts in Southeast Michigan have reason to celebrate as Slows Bar BQ, the iconic Detroit smokehouse, prepares to expand with a new location in Ann Arbor. Known for its mouthwatering smoked meats and signature sandwiches, Slows has built a loyal following over two decades of operation. The restaurant’s announcement is exciting news for Ann Arbor residents and visitors who will soon be able to enjoy the establishment’s renowned barbecue offerings without traveling to Detroit.

Slows Bar BQ’s expansion represents a significant addition to Ann Arbor’s already lively culinary scene. As the restaurant finalizes preparations for its grand opening, locals are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the beloved Detroit institution. For residents of nearby communities like Plymouth-Canton, approximately 20 miles east of Ann Arbor, the new location offers a convenient option for satisfying barbecue cravings without making the longer trek to Detroit.

The new Slows Bar BQ will make its home at 207 E. Washington St. in downtown Ann Arbor, taking over the space previously occupied by Blue Tractor BBQ and Brewery. While restaurant staff have indicated the opening is coming “very soon,” they’ve yet to announce a specific date for the grand opening. The location is prime real estate in Ann Arbor’s downtown district, providing excellent visibility and accessibility for both locals and visitors to the university town.

This new brick-and-mortar establishment builds upon Slows’ existing relationship with the Ann Arbor community. The restaurant has already established a presence in the area through its catering services and food truck operations, which have been popular at local events, including Ann Arbor SummerFests and Art Fairs. The former Blue Tractor space has been undergoing significant renovations since its temporary closure last May, described as an “exciting remodel” that will now culminate in bringing Slows’ distinctive barbecue style to Ann Arbor’s downtown dining landscape.

Slows Bar BQ has been a cornerstone of Detroit’s food scene since opening its doors in Corktown 20 years ago. The restaurant quickly developed a reputation for exceptional barbecue that helped spark revitalization in the neighborhood. Slows’ menu has become legendary among Michigan barbecue aficionados, with signature sandwiches leading the charge. “The Reason” – featuring smoked pork butt topped with house-made coleslaw and dill pickles – and “The Yardbird” – a combination of smoked pulled chicken, mushrooms, cheddar, and bacon – have achieved almost cult-like status among loyal customers.

Beyond its famous sandwiches, Slows offers traditional barbecue staples executed with precision and care. Their ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and rich mac and cheese have kept customers coming back for two decades. The Ann Arbor location joins Slows’ existing operations, which include their flagship Corktown restaurant, a pickup spot on Cass Avenue in Detroit, and an upcoming Oakland County location slated to open this fall. While previous expansions to Pontiac and Grand Rapids ultimately closed, the continued growth indicates the lasting popularity of their slow-smoked approach to barbecue. For residents across Southeast Michigan, these expansions mean more opportunities to enjoy what many consider the region’s premier barbecue experience.
